Markus Mehr is a German composer, sound artist, and performer whose practice explores the relationship between sound, space, and perception. For more than two decades, he has developed immersive works in which listening becomes both a physical and contemplative experience, revealing the hidden dimensions of contemporary sonic environments.

Between 2009 and 2017, Mehr collaborated extensively with visual artist Stefanie Sixt, creating a series of acclaimed audiovisual performances including Synchron, Komo, Sublimity Water, Transit, B/C/H/I/J, Re-Directed, and Dyschronia. Presented in museums, churches, festivals, and alternative venues throughout Europe, these projects investigated the dialogue between moving image, architecture, and experimental sound.

Alongside his performance practice, Mehr has composed for theatre and participated in numerous interdisciplinary collaborations. In 2013, selections from his album On accompanied the premiere of First Life, directed by Verena Billinger and Sebastian Schulz. That same year, he took part in John Cage's Musicircus, conducted by Charles Hayward during the Timezones Festival in Bari, Italy.

From 2014 onwards, his work increasingly focused on sound installations and spatial composition. He created his first large-scale installation, From A To B, while developing projects such as Items/Stille—a contemporary reinterpretation of Luigi Nono's Fragments/Stille—and a new reading of Bertolt Brecht's songs for the theatrical production Brecht – In einem anderen Licht. His albums, including Binary Rooms (2014), Re-Directed (2016), Dyschronia, Liquid Empires(2018), Brief Conversations (2020), and Pressure (2022), reflect the continuous evolution of his sonic language.

Since 2018, Markus Mehr has chosen to present his work exclusively through live musical performance, allowing sound itself to become the sole medium of experience. His compositions have been presented internationally at festivals such as Akousma (Montreal), FIAV (Casablanca), and the Echo Festival (Dubai). In 2025, his sound installation SUPRA was released as a limited-edition vinyl by the renowned label Gruenrekorder, while Airports For Music was featured in the official programme of Chemnitz 2025 – European Capital of Culture, in collaboration with raster media.

Through an oeuvre that bridges composition, sound installation, and spatial listening, Markus Mehr has established himself as a distinctive voice in contemporary sound art.
